Angry Burundi teachers to withhold examination results

Bujumbura, Burundi – Teachers in Burundi, a ngered by the government delay in meeting their demands for better working conditions, say they will not release the results of the promotion examinations.

Sources close to their union told PANA here "We will work with the academic cale ndar for the end of year examinations, but we will withhold the results if the government further delays responding favourably to our demands."

Burundi teachers in primary and secondary schools made a number of demands from government since 2002.

Their demands include enhanced housing allowance, salary increase and promotion, according to Mrs. Eulalie Nibizi, Chairperson of the Burundi Union of Free Teac hers (SLEB).

According to Mrs. Nibizi, the teachers are not pleased that the government has remained admant and failed to enter into dialogue with them.

"We will conduct the end of year examinations as usual, but the results will not be released, as long as the government fails to respond favourably to our demands", she insisted.

Time is fast running out for their response with just one week to the end of the 2007-2008 academic year.
