Malawi pleads with UN to send more soldiers to DRC

Malawi government has reportedly made a special request to the United Nations to release funds to allow it send additional soldiers to DRC, a local radio has reported.

Currently, Malawi has 111 soldiers in DRC who are assisting in bringing peace to the war-torn diamond-rich nation.

Brigadier General Chinjala of the Malawi Defence Force made the plea in Goma, DRC during a five-day tour of duty in that country.

The Brigadier General and his entourage also visited Kisangani where Malawi soldiers are based.

Chinjala told Zodiak Radio that the Malawi army contingent in DRC was overwhelmed with the huge workload hence the need to send additional 35 soldiers.

"We were visiting our soldiers in Kisangane region where they are based but we saw that there was too much work for them. We therefore thought of talking to the division commander to ask the UN if we could send more troupes now that the soldiers are moving from Kisangane to Goma," said Chinjala.

He said government was hopeful of a positive response from the UN head office after being briefed by the Division Commander.

Chinjala said the DRC visit was among others meant to re-supply the troupes, give them morale and also to discuss with authorities some logistical issues as Malawian soldiers move from Kisangane to Goma.

There are tens of thousands of soldiers from across the world under the banner of United Nations Peace Mission in DRC who are trying to bring peace to that country due to the refusing-to-die war that has so far seen thousands of civilian people dead.
