The UN estimates that at present rates two thirds of the forest will have vanished by the year 2040.

To help alleviate the threat the British government is launching the Congo Basin Forest Fund, a $100 million project which will provide grants to conservation projects in the region.

Esther Lutonde Bikumbi works for one such project in the eastern DRC, Forest Network Conservation.

Samuel Nnah Ndobe is from the Centre for Environment and Development in Cameroon.

They both came into the World Today's studio and spoke to the BBC's Mark Whitaker.
