Winners of Amnesty Scottish Media Awards announced

The winners of the 2008 Amnesty Scottish Media Awards were announced in The Scottish Parliament last night.
The awards, which focus upon human rights, are run in association with Amnesty.
The winner was a film entitled 'Congo to Motherwell' by Dorothy Parker, Fiona Walker and Matt Pinder from BBC Scotland with editing by Hilary McCusker-Thompson. The documentary, screened in August last year, followed two Congolese families as they made their passage from the Kala Refugee Camp in Northern Zambia to start their new life in Motherwell, Scotland. The film outlines how the families fled violence, dealt with life in a refugee camp and learnt how to cope with their new life in Scotland.
The film also includes harrowing eyewitness accounts of the atrocities witnessed in Africa.
As one of the refugees, Therese, describes in the film: "When we were running away down the road you would see one of your friends being shot, or maybe someone with a baby on her back. You would see the bullets going into the baby, see the blood leaking and realise that the baby was dead. Such things used to happen when we were fleeing. Seeing dead bodies on the ground. On our way we would be taken and locked up somewhere in order to be killed. By God's grace, we were saved."
Runner up was Billy Briggs with an article entitled 'In the Line of Fire' for Scotland on Sunday's Spectrum magazine, which detailed the violence engulfing Port-au- Prince, the capital of Haiti--
