A UGANDAN serving in the US air force, Capt. Lukiah Mulumba, has donated land worth sh30m to the Sickle Cell Association of Uganda.
The association will build their headquarters on the plot in Namalere, Wakiso district.

Mulumba, a mother of a six-year-old sickle cell patient, said she was touched by the deplorable condition of the sickle cell clinic at Mulago hospital.

Mulumba, who is also a nurse, said the new home for the association would mark the beginning of the fight against the disease countrywide.

I am determined to change the face of sickle cell in Uganda.
To spearhead the fight against sickle cell, Mulumba founded the Uganda American Sickle Cell Rescue Fund, an NGO through which she advocates support to sickle cell patients in US and Uganda.

Ruth Nankanja, the chairperson of the Sickle Cell Association of Uganda, led journalists to the site of their new home on Tuesday.

Nankanja said they need $130,000 (over sh213m) to put up the offices, adding that they hope to get the funds through local and international fundraising.

Several corporate firms, including and Rotary Clubs have pledged support.
