Celtel is reborn as Zain

Celtel Uganda, a brand that has amassed vitality, power and even affection in the marketplace across the nation over the last 14 years is, sadly, some may say, no more.

In it place is a new, fresh entity called Zain Uganda, whose pink, black and green colours, thanks to a fantastically managed seamless transition, have already swathed every inch of the nation.

In a statement yesterday, Zain, the parent company of Celtel Uganda said it "rebranded its entire African operations from Celtel to Zain," a move that will give the emerging-market telecoms behemoth a single trading name across its operations in  the Middle East and Africa.

In a remarkable new innovation, the company also announced that it had interconnected its Middle East and Africa networks which now enables its borderless "One Network" service to be transcontinental.

One Network allows Celtel's (now Zain) subscribers to make calls to their travelling colleagues at local tariffs also removes the costly roaming charges (received alls are costless).  If implemented effectively, it would be the world's first transcontinental network.

14 country operations across Africa were yesterday all re-christened Zain, namely: Burkina Faso, Chad, the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Niger, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
