Federal prosecutors have charged a Florida businessman with defrauding the U.S. of $181 million in an alleged scheme to steal payroll taxes.
Frank L. Amodeo, a disbarred lawyer and venture capitalist who once rubbed shoulders with the political elite in Florida and Washington, is accused of using a web of payroll-processing companies he controlled to divert FICA and other withholding taxes from the Internal Revenue Service.
Mr. Amodeo and unnamed co-conspirators diverted taxes from the paychecks of 29,700 employees of 2,200 small businesses between 2004-06, according to a federal indictment disclosed Thursday in Orlando, Fla. The 2,200 businesses weren't identified ...
