UN calls for adherence to human rights

New York, US - The UN has charged peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to adhere to international rules governing human rights.

UN secretary-general's special representative in DR Congo Alan Doss, who made the call Thursday in Kinshasa, said that a new initiative to strengthen measures to reduce human rights abuses by UN personnel has been introduced.

The Pan African News Agency (PANA) reports that Doss, in a news release issued by the UN Department of Public Information here, called on peacekeepers in the region to strictly follow the UN Code of Conduct while on deployment missions.

He also promised to hold talks with a panel of experts, including Congolese and international members, on how the UN peacekeeping mission in DR Congo would ensure human rights misconduct does not take place.

Doss called for measures to make sure peacekeepers are held accountable in the event of an abuse of human rights.

"The people of DR Congo deserve the highest standards of conduct from civilian and military peacekeepers alike,'' the UN official emphasised.
