Weekend Congo walk will help war-torn women

(STAFF) -- A walk will be held at Heritage Park in Barrie on Saturday to benefit women of the Congo.

The Women of the Congo: Poverty to Power Five Kilometre Walk supports the award-winning international nonprofit organization Women for Women. The group empowers women survivors of war in countries including Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Iraq, Kosovo, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to move toward economic self-sufficiency with a yearlong program of direct aid, human rights, medical care, education, and job skills training.

The walk, organized by local residents and cousins, Amanda and Jessi Fournier, begins at the park and will end at the Southshore Community Centre.

The Fourniers decided to support the organization's efforts in the Congo after learning about the women there who are stuck in a violent conflict, often being raped and then ostracized from their communities and families.
