MONUC firefighters helped out their Congolese countrerparts to tackle a large fire in the centre of Kinshasa last night. It started around nine o'clock in the evening in the Botour office building in the Gombe area of the city. Gombe is the main business district in Kinshasa.

The appeal by local authorities came after teams from the City Council and from ONATRA arrived first on the scene. They fought the fire for several hours before calling for MONUC's help.

The fire broke out on the second floor of the building which is thought to contain a library. It destroyed many offices.

MONUC sent firefighters in three shifts. The fire was finally brought under control at 11 o'clock this morning.
