PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has asked journalists to utilise the current liberalised economy to effectively communicate science information for the development of the country.

If the energy journalists spend in political talks can be diverted into science, technology and development, Uganda will surely develop. Let this be a starting point for our mass media to engage in constructive issues of development and the future, he said.

This was in a speech read for him by the Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Ham Mukasa Muliira at the opening of the conference for science communication 2008 at Imperial Royale Hotel on Monday.

Museveni said the Government has put in place press freedom and other infrastructure like information, communication and technology ministry to enable information flow to the public.

He said since 1986, considerable efforts have been made to promote science and technology in the country.

Museveni said the government is in the process of publishing a career guidance manual to guide the students on what courses to undertake at the University level.

There is no unemployment in Uganda; but the subjects our children study are not relevant with the job market. There are many jobs in the field of science like medicine, engineering, information technology and agriculture and the majority of graduates do not have such qualifications.

The three-day conference was attended by science communicators from all over the world.
