UN troops in DRC confrontation

A convoy of UN soldiers was involved in a confrontation with government troops and the local population in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) late on Sunday. The soldiers - from the UN's MONUC peacekeeping force - were travelling through North Kivu province, scene of much of the recent fighting in the country, when they were stopped by government troops. The government forces said ten members of a militia force travelling with the convoy were supporters of rebel leader General Laurent Nkunda. The militia members claimed they were members of the Mai Mai, a force sympathetic to the government.

At first, the MONUC force refused to hand the militia men over. This prompted an angry crowd of local residents to gather. The crowd began insulting the peacekeepers, then threw stones at them. The MONUC troops eventually allowed the government troops to take the militia members away.
