The Italian government has contributed Euro 500,000 (sh1.2 b) as a response to the Congolese refugee influx in Uganda.
A statement from the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, Kampala office said the donation is part of a larger contribution of Euro1,541,000 (about sh3.7b) set aside for the refugee programme in Uganda.
Thousands of Congolese are fleeing the fighting that broke out in eastern DRC, between the Government of DRC and rebel troops of the dissident General Laurent Nkunda, in August this year.
There has been a steady stream of refugees crossing into Uganda, bringing the number to over 13,000. Some have been transferred to Nakivale refugee settlement.
The Italian donation came at a time when water, sanitation and health facilities at Nakivale are overstretched.
