EU, Ivory Coast Reach Trade, Development Agreement

BRUSSELS -- The European Union and Ivory Coast Wednesday signed a trade agreement that will allow exports from the West African country duty free access to E.U. markets.

Ivory Coast's market will be opened only gradually in return, with 81% of imports from the E.U. subject to lower duties in return over a period of 15 years, the E.U. said.

E.U. exports of products such as pumps, generators, some vehicles and chemicals, which aren't produced in Ivory Coast, will have immediate access to the country's market without duties.

The deal also provides assistance to Ivory Coast to help improve its economic competitiveness, the E.U. said.
