South Africa / Media statement / No decision as yet on Chikane's tenure
PRETORIA, South Africa, October 3, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Presidency wishes to clarify the fact that no decision has been
taken as yet by President Motlanthe and the Director General Frank
Chikane about the DG's tenure in The Presidency beyond the end of his
contract at the end of October 2008.
The DG also reiterates, that he had already indicated last year when
his contract ended and was renewed, that he only wished to serve until
the end of this month when the renewed contract will end.
Former President Thabo Mbeki had started discussions with DG Chikane
about him possibly continuing to assist until the end of term of this
government.
This discussion has continued with President Motlanthe and
a decision on the matter is still to be made. Therefore it is very
wrong to state that the DG has decided to quit.
Further communication on this matter will made as soon as a decision
has been made by the President and the DG.
