The team is expected to depart for Beijing on Monday afternoon. The National Sports Council (NSC) Secretary General, Leonard Thadeo, issued the warning to athletes during a brief ceremony to hand over track suits to the team in Dar es Salaam yesterday. The kits were offered to the team by the Tanzania International Container Terminal Services (TICTS), who recently contributed 35m/- for preparations of athletes who will compete in the Games. "Of recent some hostile behaviours are emerging in sports. Dishonest individuals are using sports to conduct their dirty business," Thadeo said. He was referring to a recent incident in which, the national boxing team's contingent to the African Boxing Championships was arrested in connection with drugs trafficking. Ironically, three people in the contingent were non boxers and were not part of the boxing federation. Thadeo wished Tanzanian athletes great achievements in the Games and asked them to bring back home medals. Responding to Thadeo's call, Chef de Mission Charles Nyange said that no joyrider would be on the trip saying everyone in the Tanzanian contingent had reason to make the trip. "There will be no joyriders as everyone who is travelling has a role to play in Beijing. We have already instructed every one in the camp to refrain from bad behaviours," he said. TICTS Terminal Manager Cassian Ng'amilo said the company was proud to be associated with the Olympic team. "We are delighted to sponsor the team and even more thrilled to be associated with the calibre of athletes who will represent the country in the games. "As you go out there, go with the knowledge that we at TICTS believe in you, that Tanzania believes in you. Go there and make our country proud because you have the capacity to win," he said. Tanzania will be represented in athletics and swimming. The games squad consists of ten athletes (eight athletes and two swimmers). Boxer Emillian Patrick, who had also qualified for the games, was dropped recently after he was implicated with drug trafficking in Mauritius. The athletics team has three marathoners who are Samson Ramadhani, Getuli Bayo, and Msenduki Mohamed. It also consists of track event runners. They are Dickson Marwa (10,000 metres), Fabian Joseph who will compete in 10,000 and 5,000 metres. The list also has Samson Kwang'w (10,000m), Zakia Mrisho (5,000) and Samwel Mwera (800m). The swimming team has Khalid Rushaka and Magdalena Moshi. The team will be accompanied with two youth camp athletes, who are Tyler Lyimo from Filbert Bayi School and Marissa Baretto from SOS School in Zanzibar. Officials who will make the trip include Minister for Information, Culture and Sports George Mkuchika, minitry official Frank Macha, athletics coach juma Ikangaa, swimming coach John Belela, and team physiotherapist Elias Maigeh. Others include the Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) president Gullam Rashid and his Secretary General Filbert Bayi, administrative officer Jamal Adi, Mirisho Sarakikya who is the special guest for the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and journalist Nellya Canutte. | |
