Belgium urged to resume diplomatic relations with DRC

Louis Michel, the European Commissioner for Developme nt and Humanitarian Aid, has called on the Belgian government to resume diplomatic ties with the DR Cong following Kinshasa'a decision Saturday to recall its ambassador in Brussels.

DR Congo recalled its ambassador in protest against against what it called "the disdainful remarks repeatedly made" by the Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karel de Gucht, targeted at the Congolese authorities.

When he appeared in a television programme Sunday, Michel, a former Belgian Foreign minister, criticised those in Belgium who seem to forget that President Kabila was democratically elected and that the Congolese Parliament functions normally.

Reacting to Michel's statement, Karel De Gucht said even if Kabila was democratically elected, he could criticise the African leader if there was the need.

Michel was the main architect of the improvement in relations between Brussels and Kinshasa, after they were frozen for 10 years (from1990 to 2000) at Belgium's initiative, following the April 1990 massacre of students from the University of Lubumbashi
