Chinese police have decided to strike hard
against drinking and driving to make
roads safer.
Result: 15 000 people arrested in the first week.
Chinese police arrested 15,000 people who
drove while intoxicated during the first week
of an operation to fight against drunk driving,
set up after a series of fatal accidents
which have outraged public opinion,
China reported Sunday news.
The operation, launched by
the Chinese authorities August 15 for
a period of two months, aims to make
roads safer before and during the celebrations
of the 60th anniversary of the founding of
the communist state in early October,
says the agency official.
It also responds to a growing anger among
the public after a spate of fatal accidents
caused by drivers drunk in recent months.
In early August, a young 16 year old daughter
was killed in the city of Hangzhou (East)
while a boy aged 4 years
was fatally struck in Shanghai.
In July, to give a strong signal, the Chinese court
had first sentenced to death a driver who
had killed four people after having
drunk a "large quantity" of a local alcohol.
The convicted appealed.

La police chinoise a arrêté 15.000 personnes
qui conduisaient en état d'ivresse, lors de la
première semaine d'une opération de lutte
contre l'alcoolisme au volant, mise en place
après une série d'accidents mortels
qui ont indigné l'opinion,
a rapporté dimanche Chine nouvelle.
L'opération, lancée par les autorités chinoises
le 15 août pour une durée de deux mois,
a pour objectif de rendre les routes plus sûres
avant et pendant les célébrations
du 60e anniversaire de la fondation de
l'État communiste début octobre,
précise l'agence officielle.
Elle fait également suite à une montée de
la colère dans l'opinion publique,
après une vague d'accidents mortels provoqués
par des chauffeurs en état d'ivresse
au cours des derniers mois.
Début août, une jeune fille de 16 ans a été tuée
dans la ville de Hangzhou (Est) tandis qu'un garçonnet
âgé de 4 ans a été mortellement percuté à Shanghai.
En juillet, afin de donner un signal fort,
la justice chinoise avait pour la première fois
condamné à la peine capitale,
un conducteur qui avait tué quatre personnes
après avoir bu une "grosse quantité"
d'un alcool local.
Le condamné a fait appel.
