An English teacher from Uganda and a clan elder were shot and killed in separate incidents Friday in Somalia's Lower Shabelle region, sources said.

The Uganda-born teacher was shot and killed in an overnight attack by unidentified gunmen near Afgoye district, 30km south of the capital Mogadishu.

Students of the late Ugandan teacher told Garowe Online that he had been living in Somalia for the past four years and had converted to the religion of Islam years ago.

Administrators at the school in Lower Shabelle where the late Ugandan taught have not issued any officials statement to the press, but condemned his killing.

Nuriye Ali Farah, deputy police commissioner of Lower Shabelle region, said local police had received "credible leads" and were investigating the murder.

In an unrelated incident, a group of unidentified gunmen shot and killed clan elder Osman Hassan Ahmed in Koryoley district, also part of Lower Shabelle region.

Somalia, in eastern Africa's Horn, has not had a strong functioning government since 1991.

The current interim government - backed up by thousands of Ethiopian troops - has remained largely ineffective in controlling and policing the country of 8 million people.
