Vodacom Tanzania to expand despite split with Telkom

Vodacom Tanzania has vowed to continue pushing for network expansion to cover the whole country despite the looming split between Vodacom International and its parent company, Telkom South Africa.

"We understand the importance of people communicating, especially in rural areas," said Vodacom Tanzania CEO Dietlof Mare. "For this reason, we will continue expanding our network and cover the whole country."

Mare said Vodacom's investment in Tanzania has reached US$2 billion, and he expects that amount to increase with continued expansion.

Telkom South Africa and the U.K.'s Vodafone own stakes in Vodacom International, an arrangement said to be bedeviling all three operators. The shareholding of Vodacom International by the three companies is structured in such a way that it has become extremely difficulty for Vodacom to make acquisitions where Telkom and Vodafone have a presence.

Telkom South Africa CEO Reuben September said that competition between the companies has made a split increasingly inevitable.

Telkom and Vodacom have already acknowledged the intention to split, while Vodafone has not yet commented. Vodacom management has mentioned the possibility of Vodafone using Vodacom as its management vehicle in Africa if the U.K. company chooses to maintain its shareholding.
