PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has called on African leaders to build a defence force for the continent or risk being wiped out.

He said Americans were now aiming at four-dimensional superiority (air, water, land and cyber defence) while Africans were sleeping.

This four dimensional superiority is a threat world-wide. But we in Africa do not even have a defence centre to follow these developments. We shall be killed like insects.

He said he was delighted that the East African leaders had at least got together to revive regional cooperation.

Closing the East African armed forces sports and culture week in Munyonyo on Wednesday night, Museveni warned against the other, silent enemy that was threatening the forces.

We have an enemy which does not use a gun and that is AIDS. AIDS is got through lack of discipline. I appeal to the commanders to use these kind of gatherings to teach about AIDS, so that our young people do not die.

Defence forces from East African countries except Burundi took part in the games, held in Kampala. Ugandan was the overall winner with 39 points, followed by Kenya (37) and Tanzania (30). Rwanda trailed with only 1 point.

The function was attended by Kenyan and Tanzanian defence ministers as well as the Chief of Defence Forces from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda. Army boss Gen. Aronda Nyakairima said they were pursuing the ultimate goal of one East African force under one command. The sports meetings, he added, had shown glowing solidarity among the EAC forces.

Kenyan army chief Jeremiah Kianga called the sports week a step closer towards a political federation.

We, as generals, believe that there is no better idea than this cooperation. We have the will to move East Africa to another level, he said.
