Rwandan Family Eagerly Awaits Habitat For Humanity Home

Family Left War, Genocide Behind

UPDATED: 2:52 pm CDT August 7, 2008

A local family is getting ready for the move of a lifetime. The Uwamahoro-Kalisa will be moving into a home built by Habitat for Humanity but it won't be their first home. The home they built in Rwanda burned to the ground during the war and genocide there in 1994. They escaped, but many loved ones did not, WISC-TV reported. With a chorus of volunteers' hammers, a dream is being built."It's exciting; at the beginning you don't know how your house will go. Now, you can think about how it will be," said Evariste Kalisa, a husband and father.Kalisa and his wife, Clementine Uwamahoro, are getting support for their new southeast-side Madison home from Habitat for Humanity."This is my new house, you know?" said Uwamahoro. "Kids ask every day -- how's new house coming Mom?" But as fast as the walls are going up some new emotions are setting in."Start building and now I'm thinking about the mortgage. I'm not lying to you! At 50 years old and 20 to 25 years years for payments, it's not easy," said Kalisa. And despite his concern, he was there as the house top started being pulled together, as was his wife. The family is looking forward to having a roof over their heads and having their family together in their new home. They are hoping to be in the new home by November, WISC-TV reported.WISC-TV first reported the family's story back in May and the family includes Evariste's mother -- her eight siblings were killed in Rwanda. They've adopted a daughter, who also lost her family there and they have three sons.
