PARIS (AP) -- French soccer champion Zinedine Zidane says he didn't watch soccer for a year after leaving the game.

Zidane says he cut himself off "completely" from soccer after retirement, not watching a single game, not following competitions, and not reading about the sport in the newspaper.

The French star -- who retired in 2006, famously head-butting an Italian opponent during his last World Cup finals match -- spoke to daily newspaper Le Figaro, in an interview published Friday.

But Zidane told the newspaper he's back watching the game again with Euro 2008.

Le Figaro says the rare interview was obtained because it did not ask questions about Euro 2008 and France's poor performance.

Zidane told the paper that he doesn't miss his past life as a football star, except for the adrenaline rush during the game itself.
