June 27 (Bloomberg) -- Rwanda is seeking a third national telephone operator to boost competitiveness as legislation limiting the number of telecommunications companies in the central African country nears its expiry date.
Rwanda wants to award a 15-year license to a new operator for both fixed-line and mobile-phone services, the state-run Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency said in a statement circulated today at a regional investment conference in the capital, Kigali. Bids will close in September and the agency said it anticipates the new license will be awarded in December.
MTN Rwandacell, a unit of South African-based MTN Group Ltd. and Rwandatel SA, a unit of the Libya-based Lap Green, were given a five-year duopoly that expires this month.
