Anglo American strike halves South Africa coal output

It is reported that Anglo American one day national strike last week has reduced worker turnout at its coal operations in the country to 45%, although it had yet to estimate the impact on production.

Mr Pranill Ramchander company spokesman said that "Overall, there's been a 55% stay away. All the mines are still in operation, but I can't quantify production losses at this time."

Mr Lesiba Seshoka spokesman said that the National Union of Mineworkers, the largest labor group in the country's mining sector, expects most of its members to participate in organized marches across the country.

Anglo American's South African coal mines produced over 59 million tonnes in 2007. Its platinum mines in South Africa represent 37.7% of world supply and 16.9% of the world's palladium output.
