Moral degeneration is the cause of religious and leadership conflicts in the country, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Henry Luke Orombi, has said.

Bishop Orombi, who was concluding his week-long tour of Kinkizi Diocese in Kanungu District on Sunday, said whereas 75 per cent of the country's population was Christian, problems of corruption, violence and segregation continued unchecked. He observed that the Church was experiencing rifts due to deteriorating morals.

"There is no longer heartfelt fellowship among Ugandans," Archbishop Orombi said. "You people in western Uganda took a retired Bishop to court. Reverends have been in court instead of praying and resolving the conflicts within the church."

In 2005, then Bishop Elisha Kyamugambi of Ankole Diocese was taken to court by the laity over a land conflict. Archbishop Orombi added that some fake born-again church leaders had hindered growth of the Church due to their questionable conduct.

He said parents should guide their children to desist from immoral behaviour since they are growing up in a very dangerous world where parents are defiling their own daughters and killing their children.
