Brasseries et Limonaderies du Rwanda (Bralirwa) the sole Rwandan brewer has again emerged the top tax payer in the country paying almost $52m in taxes.
It is the second successive time that Bralirwa leads the pack of tax payers and this year's contribution represents 14 per cent of the total local tax revenue. MTN Rwanda which contributed a tune of $26.3m was announced as the most compliant taxpayer in the country.

Top contributors were mainly drawn from the banking, petroleum and hospitality institutions these included; Electrogaz - electricity,
Ameki color - paints, World Vision Rwanda - NGO, Bank de Kigali - banking, Banque Commerciele du Rwanda S.A - banking, Total Rwanda - petroleum, Serena Hotel - hospitality, SONARWA - insurance, ORPTN - tourism, Magerwa - warehousing.
These were declared at the recent 7th annual Rwanda Revenue Authority's (RRA) Tax Payers' Day in Kigali. Bralirwa's success comes as the company seeks to enter into the Ugandan market and consolidate the Congolese market. It also wants to expand its capacity to ensure a 30 per cent rise in volumes next financial year.
MTN's remains a leading player in the country controlling more than 95 per cent of the market share in providing Internet and mobile services.
According to Mr Anthony Mazosera, MTN Rwanda's Chief Financial Officer, the company paid $5m in 2006 and almost $26.3m in 2007.
The MTN Group Integrated Business Report places MTN Rwanda, a company that boasts of having at least 600,000 active subscribers, at the same level with MTN operations in Swaziland and Botswana for having contributed 1 per cent revenue to the total revenue of MTN's South and East African region.
Electrogaz - a public utility for production, transmission and distribution of water and electricity in Rwanda - was also recognised as one of the most compliant tax payer although no figures were published.

ORTPN inclusion also didn't come as a surprise since the agency's announcement early this year that tourism generated about $42.3m revenue receipts in the 2007 and attracted about 39,000 tourists. In the banking sector, Bank de Kigali (BK) took the leading position. Banque Commerciele du Rwanda S.A paid almost $600,000.
