RDC : Imminent genocide under the noze of 15,000 bleu Helmets

Antoinette K. Kankindi

Orléans, 12 Octobre 2007

It's always a just cause that opposes the Goliaths and the young Davids of this world. At this very moment, there is a David fighting against all Goliaths of the Congolese political arena. Why Goliaths in plural ? Well, simply because they are eventually quite a number. Just reading the press, it is easy to see the declarations of FARDC officers, FDLR hardliners feeling strong due to the Kinshasa government backing their crimes, the newly formed FDLK, a home copy-cat of FDLR made up of all kind of negative forces, also backed by the government, and finally the MONUC with its 15,000 bleu helmets. All these forces forming a coalition against a single individual, Brigade-general Laurent NKUNDA MIHIGO whose force amounts to 4 or 5,000 men according to the media. We are talking about more or less 30,000 army men against 5,000 insurgents. Truly a David against too many Goliaths indeed. All of them are driven by the same determination to thrush David in the Masisi mountains. Kabila is using them to systematically carry out his military option against the rebels, even though he knows, like everyone else, that this is not the solution to the mega security problem in the Kivu and the whole country. Two days ago, in his usual ambiguous declarations to the press, the Belgian Minister, Karel de Gucht, updating journalists in Brussels on his diplomatic marathon in New York, was saying the same thing we know . He repeated that the military option was not the solution since the security problem in the Kivu was more complex than that, and thus requires a more global political negociation. He is convinced on the other hand that the Kivu populations have the right to be heard. A claim that is one of the essential revendications of the CNDP and that can be downloaded from the movement's website.

So why is Nkunda asking for a ceasefire that Kinshasa is proudly ignoring ? He has explained it himself. As long as the battle was being fought in the mountains, there were no problems. But then the government attacks, which forced him into a major offensive defense since Monday, started targetting populated areas. Nkunda wants to avoid human catastrophy at all cost. However, we know that FDLR, the genocide forces being used by Kinshasa, have been dreaming for a long time for such an opportunity to exterminate Congolese tutsis, the way they did in Rwanda. They don't even hide those criminal intentions, they openly tell journalists why they are fighting Nkunda (Arnaud Zajtman of the bbc on thurday's report, this week). It is not surprising then that tutsi and other populations are running away towards the rebels controlled zones where they will be really protected. They are simply running away from an actual extermination under the watch of the whole world once again. If MONUC has ordered its contingent to leave Mushaki so as to avoid receiving the 500 soldiers from Nkunda's forces on their way to integrating the army, it is because they want to put him between the rock and a hard place. But still worse, they are abandonning the civil population, and at the same time they are supplying arms and munitions to the FARDC-FDLR-FDLK coalition. Once again, they are doing a criminal job instead of creating a humanitary corridor for the population displacing towards Kilorirwe for protection. By running towards Kilorirwe instead of Goma where all NGOs are confortably based, the population movement is showing the little confidence they have in Monuc and the government forces. Monuc, like the Minuar in the 1990s is proving evidently how UN forces collaborate to the building up of a genocide.

In fact, in calling for a ceasefire within this context, Nkunda was giving a chance to everyone in the conflict to save their face :

-          First to the Congolese government which is thrushing its own people like an elephant in cabagge fields. This is an image illustrating perfectly the disproportion of forces fighting in this conflict. A ceasefire would also give, once again a chance for a political negociation which should be a must in solving the problem of the presence of FDLR and that of the Congolese army integration. To continue wagging war against the insurgents will not solve any of both problems. It is the Kinshasa willingness to provide conditions for FDLR to carry out another genocide that is making Tshikez Diemu ignore arrogantly Nkunda's call for ceasefire. His arrogance is also nurtured by the hardliners in the Kabila government and some Kivu MPs whose xenophobia is well known.

-          Secondly to the International Community, which has invested so much effort in maintaining a costly UN force in the Congo. At this rate, the International Community is going to find itself, in the coming days, with its hands stained with the innocent population's blood. By siding with the genocide forces, William Swing and Joseph Kabila should be ready to face the responsibility of methodically provoking a genocide. A responsibility to be shared with all member States of the United Nations, and especially the Great Lakes region countries who are passively watching this happen. Isolating Nkunda, by refusing to deal with his legitimate claims and now by ignoring his call for ceasfire, the International Community is also directly responsible for the humanitary drama taking place in the Kivu.

The concentration of political passions into hatred is leading the country to sure ruin . A important part of the Congolese opinion is burning into hatred, nurtured by the one imported into the country by the consistent presence of FDLR. That is how genocides start. Whose fault is it ? The governing leadership, the media, and today with no doubt, the MONUC . Laurent Nkunda, like a true David is alone, standing to defend the only just cause in the middle of so many interests of the so many Goliaths or maffias operating in DRC. With his few men, he looks like one of the last brave soldiers still driven by a gentlemen's soul, a young soul, intransigent soul which cannot bear the smallest offense agaist the honor of the people and the country. He cannot admit the possibility of letting the Congo getting rotten by the cancer of a genocidal alliance. It is unacceptable to stain the twentyfirst African century with the same crimes that afflicted the whole humanity of the twentieth. Though the cold war that kept Africa in the dark in the twentieth century was not, perhaps, as bad as the one it is facing in today's world.
